Maryville, TN - Wesleyan College opened USA South volleyball play on Friday afternoon, dropping two conference matches to Averett University and Greensboro College, 3-0.

Notables:

  • Freshman Hannah Straut dished out seven assists on seven kills in today's first match vs. Averett, marking her most efficient outing of the season from the setter position.
  • Averett University, who was picked to finish first in the USA South East Division preseaon coaches poll, proved their rank by putting down 33 kills with only four errors while hitting an impressive .537 as a team.
  • Averett played 18 players and Greensboro played 16 players, proving the depth and consistency of their rosters.

Quotable:

"Walking into today's matches, we lacked the preparation we needed to compete with these teams," stated Wesleyan head coach Caroline Carlton. "Unfortunately, we were outhustled and outplayed. This was our first weekend of conference play, and today we saw the level of competition we will have to play with. It was not our best showing but I believe that we are making steps in the right direction to be able to compete at this level."

"Hannah Straut played her best matches of the season and stepped up in her setting position. I'm confident that we are better prepared for conference play after our matches today and am excited to perform better tomorrow."
