Wolves Softball Looks to Make Statement in New Conference

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Macon, GA - The 2017 Wesleyan College softball team is looking to combine a strong core of returners with a large group of newcomers in hopes of making waves in a new conference.

The Wolves will look to returners Valerie Clower, Victoria Clower, Tiffani Linville, and Nicole Wilson to lead the team both offensively and defensively this season. Valerie Clower is returning to the circle after missing the 2016 season with an injury and will carry the pitching load alongside senior captain Nicole Wilson. Victoria Clower will set up shop behind the plate once again this year, bringing back the sister to sister battery that worked so well for Wesleyan in the past. Junior Tiffani Linville will use her speed and experience to captain a young outfield.

Transfers Claire Crawford and Alana Walker will play big roles on the corners at first and third, while Savanna Boyette (left field), Quanetria Jackson (right field), and McKenzi Shelpman (shortstop) will be expected to produce as freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

"We will be a young team this year, possibly starting as many as four freshman. However, everybody on the team should be able to contribute. We will probably play the toughest schedule we've had in my six years at Wesleyan, playing preseason #4 Emory and #6 Berry. We also play Piedmont and North Carolina Wesleyan, who were each picked as preseason USA South divisional favorites. Although we are young and have a tough schedule, I think we have the most athletic team we've had in years, and I hope that we can surprise some teams with our bats this season."

The Wolves open the season against Covenant College on Saturday, February 11, at the Mathews Athletic Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00pm.
